Optics Recommendations?

I have a Olympic Arms pcr-3

its a 1/2moa 16in barrel flattop Ar-15 muzzle brake

I have had it for years and always had high power varmit scopes on it (was a great varmit gun)

I am looking for sugestions for going to the following
#1 lower power 12x max
#2 quick aquisition scope
#3 shorter scope (dont want the muzzle brake foggin the scope)
#4 a smaller diameter scope that will mount closer to the rail for quicker aquisition and good cheek weld
#5 correct eye relief
#6 a good quality scope
#7 low light capable would be a plus

anyone have any real experiences that might help...i was thinking maybe Trigicon but was hopeing for something that had higher power capabilitys

You don't need optics on a 16" AR -- defeats the purpose of a close combat carbine. Get a 20" DPMS LAR-10 (.308) and then put a nice scope on it.

I just bought a Bushmaster Varminter with 24" barrel, had a hell of a time finding it. Should be here next week .223 though.

I like 1-4x variables for AR-15s...1x for CQB and 4x for distance. One of my favorites is the Leupold 1-4x like the one on this FAL...or maybe you might want a little more magnification, like the 2-7x Nikon on this Stag Arms (note the offset rings):

Aimponts on my M4 style rifles. Aimpoints with 2moa dots are great for out to around 100 yards and real quick in close qtrs. I also got magnifiers with tilt mounts if I need to reach out a little further.

Larue is a good website to look at.

Mine just came in!

The Trijicon ACOG ECOS is the ultimate sight for both Close Quarter
Battle (CQB) situations and longer distance shooting where accuracy
and pinpoint bullet placement are required. Trijicon is the first
to market with its unique dark earth brown color, a definite factor
to concealment- directly contributing to the safety of the operator,
who is often in harms way.

This dual-sighting system gives the shooter a distinct tactical
advantage with the option of either the Trijicon ACOG or the Doctor
Red Dot Sight. With the quick target acquisition of the Doctor Red
Dot Sight or the precise aiming capabilities provided by the
magnified 4 power Trijicon ACOGthe shooter has the ability to
select the proper aiming solution for the situation at handtruly
the best of both worlds.

No tools are needed for windage and elevation adjustments because
the ECOS also features external windage and elevation adjusters,
making it waterproof up to 11m without caps.

I just took it out side and was looking at the neighbors that are 3/4 miles away.
Dont think I could hit anything at that distance but was able to see people very clearly walking around. Now those big fat cows in the corn field between me and the neighbors could very easily be picked off! Too bad my freezer is full! Hopefully I will get to test it out this weekend!

that fal setup looks like it would work good..i assume it aquires quickly??

the current setup i am taking off is more like your second setup with the rail riser (i am trying to get away from the rail riser setup)

That Talon setup is also intresting

I am very appreciative of all the constructive responses recieved

I will prolly end up with Nikon as I can get a good deal through a friend, just which one will still be the hard part.

btw, I have a aim point on my m4 and really like it.

I had a Talon on a LRB/Smith Enterprise Crazy Horse M14 (before I sold it) that worked great from bad breath ranges out to about 800 yards. The reticle is very unique and while it seems busy at first, it is really very simple and effective. Horus Vision reticles have been winning many Mil/LE sniper competitions over the last few years. There is an interactive tutorial on their web site (recommended) that can explain the advantages better than me.

Re: Optics Recommendations?

I like the Leupold Mark 2 1.5-4X 20mm scope and the Mark 4 1.5-5X 20 mm scope. The Mark 2 is built with a one-inch tube, and the Mark 4 is built with a 30mm tube. The latter is available with an illuminated reticle. Both scopes are around 9.3 inches long and weigh 10 ounces and 10/15 ounces (the heavier weight is for the illuminated reticle) respectively. Eye relief on the Mark 2 is at least 3.8 inches and the eye relief on the Mark 4 is at least 3.6 inches. The Mark 4 is from Leupold MR/T (Mid-Range/Tactical) line and is perfect match for an AR carbine.

I also like the old Leupold Mark 4 10X scope; however, it is 13 inches long and weighs 21 ounces. Eye relief is 3.4 inches.

Just a months wages! They were a mere 1462.00 each! The cheapest I could find it was at Centurion Tactical. Every where else was 1562 to 1699.00 Yeah, it has some kind of little peep hole on the side!

Ok..... I flat out love it! It was my first time to use the AR15 and the scope, so my first mag was just getting use to it. My first shot was a JFK top of the head, then the next one was in the neck. Several in the head. This was while sitting down with a doohicky -bipod thing to help hold the gun. Next mag was while standing and using the red dot. Next mag was standing and shooting fast using the scope, then the last mag was sitting with that doo-hicky thing again. I was shooting at 25 yards. I could not see the holes in the target without the scope. My whole experience was great, cept for the fumes that came back and burned my nose after bullet 8. I need to read up on how to use a scope at a distance. But overall, I think I could stop something in its tracks and get the unprotected area.

Not too bad for a girl!
